Gospel Matthew 8:23–27 Jesus Helps in Trouble
Jesus got into a boat, and his disciples followed him. Suddenly a great storm arose on the lake. The waves were breaking over the boat, but Jesus was asleep. Then his disciples woke him up, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing.” “Why are you so afraid, you of little faith?” Jesus said. Then he got up and rebuked the wind and the waves, and there was a great calm. The people were amazed and said, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him.” (Matthew 8:23–27 First Edition)
God’s Presence in the Midst of the Storm
Life is full of surprises, and storms can catch us completely unawares. When they strike, fear and despair can take over. Have you ever had a moment when you didn’t know where to turn? The story of Jesus calming a storm when his disciples were in distress (Matthew 8:23–27) offers comfort. This event highlights how God’s presence can be a support in difficult times.
The storms of life don’t ask for permission. They can even come suddenly, whether it’s illness, financial problems, or relationship crises. More than half of all adults in Finland have experienced financial stressors at some point in their lives. At such times, we may feel alone, just like the disciples in the stormy boat.
Jesus was with them, and he comforted them. His presence can be calming even when the storm is raging around us. From a biblical perspective, this reminds us that we are not alone. When life is stressful, it is important to turn to God and seek peace through prayer.
Is God a refuge and helper or not?
The question is: Is God just a stopgap that we turn to only in times of extreme need? In fact, according to numerous studies, more than 70 percent of people seek spiritual support in times of crisis. However, God longs for a genuine relationship with us. His purpose is to awaken us to trust Him every day, not just during storms. When something in your life feels overwhelming, remember that God is always there for you. The old story tells of a log runner who fell into a rapid. He prayed, “If you are God up there, help me.” At that moment, a log fell, and the man grabbed onto it and was saved. He continued to pray to God, “There is no need to help.”
Trusting God in Times of Need
The storms of life can be frightening, but in reality, God’s peace can be found in the midst of need. Jesus calmed the storm, and this story teaches us that God’s presence is an invaluable help to us. This peace can seem to surpass all understanding. The Bible also says, “The Lord is our refuge” (Psalm 91:2). This promise can be a source of comfort when fear and worry creep into our minds, especially when it comes to things that are important to us, such as our health or family relationships. For example, studies have shown that people of faith report a higher quality of life and less stress than others.
God in the Heart – Security and Peace
Prayer has immense power in difficult times. When we turn to God, we can develop a deeper trust in Him. Your prayer can be simple, but its impact is profound. You can even start your day by thanking God for the little things, which can lift your spirits. When we choose to turn to God, we are guided and helped through the storms of life. His presence brings peace that can turn despair into hope. This is a conscious choice that can change the direction of your life.
In conclusion
God’s presence in the midst of the storms of life is a source of empowerment that helps us experience peace in difficult times. He is committed to being with us every moment. When the storm tries to tear us apart, we can always turn to Him and trust that He is with us. Life’s challenges are inevitable, but God is our security. Trust in Him and seek peace, for in difficult times we can feel His love and care powerfully. When the storm rages, remember that God will hold you and lead you to peace.
