Gospel of John 20:19–31 Witnesses to the Resurrection
On that same day, the first day of the week, when the doors were locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, suddenly Jesus stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you!” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” When he had said this, he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of anyone, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of anyone, they are retained.”
One of the twelve disciples, Thomas, also called Didymus, was not with the others when Jesus came. The other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But Thomas said, “I will not believe. Unless I see the print of the nails in his hands and put my finger into them and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”
After a week the disciples were together again, and Thomas was with them. The doors were locked, but suddenly Jesus stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” Then he said to Thomas, “Reach out your finger, and see my hands. Reach out your hand, and put it into my side. Do not be unbelieving, but believe!” Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. These are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name. (John 20:19–31 First Edition)
Testimonies of Jesus’ Appearance
During Easter and Pentecost, churches celebrate the appearances of Jesus, which are central events at the heart of Christianity. The disciples faced difficult moments when doubt and faith struggled. Jesus’ appearance and his reassuring words, “Peace be with you” (John 20:19–31) were vital evidence of his resurrection. This was not just a fantasy; Jesus was a physical, real person who wanted to strengthen his followers.
The Gospels record several instances of Jesus appearing to his disciples. When the disciples saw Jesus, their first reaction was fear; they thought they were seeing a ghost. This is understandable, since they had recently experienced a tragedy: the crucifixion of Jesus. These appearances were confirmations of his resurrection, and they helped the disciples overcome their doubts.
For example, in the Gospel of Luke (24:36–43), Jesus asked the disciples: “Why are you in despair? Why do thoughts arise in your hearts?” He appeared to them and gave them the opportunity to touch his wounds. Such things support faith in the real appearance of Jesus and also in the meaning of his life up to that point.
Resurrection: Spirit or Body?
There is an essential distinction in Jesus’ resurrection: he rose bodily, not just spiritually. The disciples experienced this when Jesus asked them for food. He took a piece of broiled fish and ate it for them to see (Luke 24:42–43). This was not just a symbolic gesture; it confirmed that Jesus was indeed alive and bodily. A minority of adults consider the resurrection to be a "real event" based on their faith and personal experiences. This chapter shows how important it is to be able to understand the meaning of Jesus' resurrection.
The Meaning of Jesus’ Appearances to the Disciples
Jesus’ appearances were especially to those who had been close to him, and they experienced special events. This shows how a close relationship with God can open doors to deep understanding. For example, Jesus taught them to understand the scriptures and the meanings associated with his suffering and resurrection. Half of Christians believe that personal spiritual experiences can deepen faith. This is a strong reminder that faith can develop and grow when a person is open to God’s message.
Faith and Doubt: Part of the Human Experience
Doubt is human, and Jesus’ appearances remind us of this. In our religious lives, doubts and questions can arise. Jesus gently faced the disciples’ fears, and he did not judge their doubts. This is an important lesson for us: doubt can be a step toward deeper faith. When we face doubts about our faith, it is important to remember that Jesus is ready to support us, no matter how uncertain we feel. This can help us find peace and clarity on our path of faith.
Apparitions and their meaning for modern man
Although Jesus’ apparitions took place a long time ago, their meaning is still relevant today. They illustrate God’s presence and his ability to reach us. Today, many people report powerful experiences of God’s presence, and these experiences are shared by both young and old. One example is how 70 percent of young adults who attend church experience God’s presence as an empowering factor in their lives. This tells us that Jesus’ apparitions can inspire us, even though we live in a different era.
Deepening the Meaning of the Scriptures
Jesus opened the hearts and minds of his disciples so that they could understand the profound meanings of the scriptures. What is important for us? We need to deepen our own understanding of the scriptures. This may take time and focus, but it can also open up new perspectives and understanding. As we learn from the Bible, we can strengthen our faith and better understand Jesus’ teachings, which can lead to deeper spiritual growth.
Joy and Peace Through Jesus’ Presence
When Jesus appeared to his disciples, he brought peace and joy. His words, “Peace be with you,” bring comfort to many who are experiencing uncertainty and fear. The peace of Jesus is something we can experience, and it carries us through our uncertainties. An unwavering peace can come when we place ourselves in the hands of Jesus. This peace helps us overcome life’s challenges and bring joy that is independent of our circumstances.
Summary: The Appearances of Jesus and Their Impact
The appearances of Jesus to his disciples occupy a significant place in the realm of history and faith. They provide important teachings that have influenced Christian faith for generations. These events remind us that doubt and faith can go hand in hand. Jesus’ appearances are testimonies of God’s love and care. They give us the opportunity to deepen and examine our own faith. No matter what the circumstances of our lives, we can trust that Jesus is present and will strengthen us.
