Mary's Day
Third Edition
Gospel Luke 1:46–55 The Handmaid of the Lord
Mary said:
- My soul magnifies the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has looked upon the lowliness of his servant.
From now on all generations will call me blessed,
for the Mighty One has done great things for me.
His name is holy,
from generation to generation he shows mercy
to those who fear him.
His arm has done mighty things,
he has scattered
the proud in their hearts.
He has brought down the mighty from their thrones
and exalted the lowly.
The hungry he has filled
but the rich he has sent away empty-handed.
He has visited his servant Israel,
he has remembered his people, and shown mercy
to Abraham and to his descendants from generation to generation,
just as he promised our fathers. (Luke 1:46–55 Third Edition)
Mary is announced of her calling
Mary is an irreplaceable figure in God’s plan, and her role as the mother of Jesus, the strengthener of faith, and an influencer of history is significant. In the Gospel of Luke 1:46–55, Mary sings praises to God for his mercy and his great deeds. In this article, we will examine Mary both in terms of her activity in the Gospel and her influence in the Christian faith.
Mary is known as the servant of the Lord. Her life changed when the angel Gabriel announced to her that she had been chosen to be the mother of Jesus. This was not only a great honor, but also a responsibility that could have aroused fear and doubts. For example, young mothers often worry about their own abilities as parents, which is normal and human. Mary serves as an example for us of how to live in faith and trust. By accepting such a great task, she inspired many believers to take on their own challenges.
Mary and her relative Elizabeth
Mary was not alone, for she had a relative named Elizabeth who was expecting a child. This friendship was important, for Elizabeth had received a promise from God that she would have a child. The Gospel of Luke tells us that as Mary hurried to Judea, she lacked fear and turned to her support. This is a good reminder of how important community support is in difficult times. With Elizabeth’s support, Mary received the encouragement she needed during this important journey.
Mary Faces Doubts
When Mary met Elizabeth, Elizabeth praised her under the influence of the Holy Spirit. This strengthened Mary as she heard that her mission was worthy and approved by God. Mary knew that in her hometown of Nazareth she would face doubts. She was young and expecting a child out of wedlock. The situation of a young mother facing social stigma could have seemed daunting. However, Mary chose to trust God and His plan. She teaches us that we can trust God in difficult times.
Mary’s Hymn of Praise
Mary heard Elizabeth’s words and felt the desire to praise God. This hymn, recorded in the Gospel of Luke, is known as the Hymn of Praise. In it, she expresses her deep gratitude and rejoices in God’s goodness. “My soul magnifies the Lord,” she sings. These words remind us that praise is more than just singing. It is an attitude of life and heart that embodies all that God has done.
Mary as a model of faith and reverence
Although Lutheran tradition emphasizes Christ, Mary is still an important example for believers. She reminds us to trust in God’s timetable and to be courageous in the face of challenges. We can ask ourselves: What is “Mary” in our own lives? What calls us to follow God’s will? Should we conform to the mission God has given us, or do our fears remain? Mary is a significant part of salvation history. Her role in bringing the Savior into the world is irreplaceable. The Gospel of Luke tells us how Mary steps into this role and why every choice she makes deserves our respect. Mary understood that her role could lead to discrimination. She became the mother of Jesus, protecting the Son of God. Her strength and courage are examples for all of us when we face challenges.
Trust in God
Mary trusted God and knew that his plan was best. Her simplicity and purity helped her through her trials. Trust, endurance, and courage are strengths we can all cherish. When we face difficulties, we can turn to Mary and her example. She teaches us that God does not abandon us, even when difficulties pile up. Mary was not alone. She had Elizabeth, friends, and family around her. Community is an important part of life, as it can provide support and strength at all levels of life. It is important for us to develop our relationships with others, as each person has a role to play in God’s plan. Supporting community can be key in difficult times.
A broader perspective
Mary was a young woman who praised God despite her doubts. She can be compared to the examples of angels and prophets who were ready to serve.
We need to broaden our perspective and accept the diversity in God’s plans. Mary is an important part of our faith traditions and reminds us to fulfill our own callings.
Mary is honored for her special role in God’s plan. Her story teaches us to believe in God and his glory. Mary is an example of courage and forgiveness. She invites us to accept our own challenges and give thanks for God’s great deeds.
Supporting and uniting the community in different ways is also part of this journey. Mary is a historical and spiritual model for all of us. Through her, we can see how God uses us in his own plan. We live in a future where Mary is part of the development of faith and grace, and we can all be part of this journey.
Mary reminds us that God’s history, salvation, and grace are one. Her role is diverse and special. We can experience this journey of faith that enriches and rewards us in all areas of life.
