Michaelmas Day
Third Edition
Gospel Matthew 18:1–6, 10 God's Messengers
The disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?"
Then Jesus called a child to him, set him in the midst of them, and said,
"Truly I tell you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me. But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were drowned in the depth of the sea.
See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven." (Matt. 18:1–6, 10 Third Edition)
Angels in the Bible
Michael’s Day is a special feast day honoring the Archangel Michael. It is an important moment that reminds us of the importance of angels in the world of our faith. Angels are not just characters in the Bible; many say they have experienced the presence of angels in their own lives. This day provides an opportunity to reflect on how children understand the mysteries of the kingdom of God and how their genuine faith can touch us all.
There are numerous references to angels in the Bible, and their roles are diverse. They are described as messengers, protectors, and servants of God who help people in difficult situations. For example, the Archangel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would be a mother and gave her encouragement in her role. Such accounts show how angels have an important place in our spiritual lives.
According to one study, about 70 percent of people believe in the existence of angels, and 30 percent have had personal experiences with angels. This highlights that we are not alone – each of us may have our own guardian angel guiding us in the right direction. On St. Michael’s Day, we can focus on taking a moment to reflect on this meaningful connection.
Angel Experiences: An Irish Woman’s Story
Unusual angel experiences, such as the story of an Irish woman (Lorna Bryne), give depth to our insights. She began seeing angels when she was a child. Her mother noticed her smiling and looking at the side of her bed where the angels were standing. This was a normal experience for her. After attending school, the girl discovered that no one else saw angels. The angels told her things that would happen in the future, and many times these predictions came true. She developed the courage to share her experiences, writing books about them that have reached thousands of readers. His story shows how special gifts of grace can lead us into a deeper connection with God and his spirit beings.
Michaelmas Teachings from Jesus
Michaelmas is strongly associated with the teachings of Jesus. When the disciples asked who was the greatest in the kingdom of heaven, Jesus called a child to him and said, "Unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." Here Jesus is referring to the pure faith and humility of a child. Children express their feelings directly, which makes their faith impressive. Jesus urged adults to learn from children, which emphasizes the importance of being childlike and maintaining genuine faith.
An Example of Childlike Faith
I once cared for a sick little boy. When a spiritual program began on television, he stopped playing and announced, “Jesus was really killed.” This statement reminds us of how pure and powerful a child’s faith can be. He did not consider the story to be a fairy tale, but rather the truth. Jesus’ words are still relevant today: “Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” This exhortation makes us ask what we can learn from children and their pure faith.
Angels in Our Lives Today
Although many people have a questionable attitude toward angels, many still report personal encounters. Angelic experiences can manifest as a sense of peace and security. More than 50 percent of people who have been through hardship have reported receiving strength or guidance from angels. When we look at the experiences of our friends and family members, it is interesting to see how these moments can be empowering in difficult situations. Angels may manifest as a strong intuitive feeling or even as apparitions, offering us guidance and support in life’s challenges.
Michaelmas and the Community of Faith
On Michaelmas, we can come together and share experiences with angels. This is a good opportunity to discuss matters of faith and how angels have influenced our lives. Community can provide important support as we strengthen our childlike faith and learn from the sincerity that children show. Together, we can share our experiences and learn to live faithful lives. The power of community can strengthen our connection of faith, which is extremely valuable on everyone’s path in life.
Summary: A Child’s Faith and Angels
Michaelmas is an opportunity for us to reflect on how angels influence our lives and our faith. They are not just biblical beings, but signs of God’s presence and care.
Just as children sincerely believe, we can strive for a similar pure faith. Angels can teach us great things – respect, love, and joy. When we have strong faith, we can trust that we will receive support and guidance even in difficult times.
St. Michael's Day reminds us that faith, angels, and a childlike attitude will lead us toward God's promised kingdom. This is an invitation to open our hearts to childlike faith and the love of God that surrounds us every day.
