Third Sunday of Lent

Third Edition

Gospel Mark 1:12–13 Jesus the Conqueror of Temptations

The Spirit drove Jesus into the wilderness. For forty days he was in the wilderness tempted by Satan. He lived among wild animals, and angels took care of him. (Mark 1:12-13 Thirf Edition)

Lent

Lent is a special period of time in the Christian calendar that begins with Lent and lasts forty days before Easter. Although many Lutherans may have given up fasting, this time offers an opportunity to deepen our self-analysis and evaluate our lifestyles. It helps us understand what kinds of temptations can isolate us from communion with God. Temptations are a part of life, and they can manifest themselves in many different ways. Jesus was tempted in the desert, and Mark describes how “the Spirit drove him into the desert. Forty days he was tempted by Satan.” Jesus overcame temptations by appealing to God’s Word, and so should we.

Temptations and their nature

Anyone can face temptations, and according to Luther they can be divided into three main categories: the flesh, the world, and the devil. This division helps us understand the sources of temptations.

“The flesh” refers to our own desires, which often lead to selfishness. For example, if we have desires that take up our time and energy, we can forget about our duties or relationships. If we consider that even 80 percent of people often eat unhealthy foods, they may feel momentary pleasure, but in the long run it can lead to health problems. Temptations are often justified by the argument that “everyone does it.” It is important to understand that following every desire will not necessarily bring happiness or peace.

Temptations on the Path of Faith

Temptations can manifest as many challenges on the path of faith, and their impact on our faith can be profound. They can be small, everyday decisions or major life choices. In some cases, temptations can creep into our lives unnoticed. According to the teachings of Martin Luther, the temptations that God allows can actually help us grow in our faith. They can strengthen us when we learn to face them.

Statistics show that about a third of people feel that they can better resist temptations when they are aware of their existence. Growing in faith requires awareness of temptations and the ability to resist them.

Overcoming Temptation with God’s Word

Just as Jesus was able to resist his temptations in the desert, we too can overcome our own with the help of God’s Word. The Bible contains numerous examples of how God’s Word has been a support in difficult situations. When we use the promises of the Bible to resist temptation, we find strength and assurance. For example, Psalm 119:11 states, “I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin.” This reminds us that by keeping God’s Word close to us, we can better resist sin and temptation.

Lent – a time for self-examination

Lent is a great opportunity for self-examination. During this time, we can reflect on what temptations have appeared in our lives and how we can overcome them. Perhaps you decide to give up sugar or other pleasures, or you actively seek opportunities to serve others.

An analytical approach to your own life can reveal hidden desires that are leading you astray. Fasting is not just about restricting food; everyone can think about what other things they could eliminate from their lives. This can lead to great spiritual growth and deepening in their relationship with God.

The Importance of Prayer

Prayer is a central part of fasting and overcoming temptations. Through prayer, we can ask God for strength and understanding, and share our worries and fears with Him. Jesus taught us in the Lord’s Prayer that “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” The power of prayer is immense. It can bring peace to the heart and help us navigate through difficult times. When you face temptations, prayer may be just the support you need.

Connection and Community

We are not alone in our temptations. Connection with other believers is an important part of our lives and can provide support in overcoming temptations. Conversations with others, such as friends or in church, can open up new perspectives and strengthen our faith. Building a community allows us to talk openly about temptations and challenges. Otherwise, we can pray together and support each other.

There is power in community. One study found that the majority of people who are part of a support group feel that they can control their temptations better than if they were alone.

God’s Grace in Temptation

It is important to remember that each of us is flawed and makes mistakes. If we fall into temptation, God’s grace is there for us. He gives us the opportunity to turn to him for forgiveness. God does not abandon us, but is always ready to give us another chance. Grace tells us that change is possible. It is never too late to seek a connection with God. Overcoming temptations does not mean perfection, but an ongoing process of learning and growing.

Conclusion

Temptations are a part of everyone’s life, and overcoming them is possible. Lent offers a unique opportunity to evaluate our lives and focus on ways to overcome our temptations through God’s Word and prayer.

Community, prayer, and conscious choices are key to our journey. God’s grace is constantly present, enabling us to learn, grow, and overcome temptations.

Let us remember that temptations are part of life’s journey, but they can be overcome. This process strengthens us on the path of faith.
