Gospel Matthew 18:1–6 (7–9) 10 God’s Messengers
The disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?”
Then Jesus called a child to him, set him in the midst of them, and said, “Truly, truly, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me. But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea. (Woe to the world and its temptations! It is inevitable that temptations will come, but woe to the person through whom they come! If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire. And if your eye causes you to stumble, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes. that you shall be cast into hell fire.)
See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I say to you that in heaven their angels always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 18:1–6 (7–9) 10 Second Edition)
Meaningful Teachings from Jesus
The Gospel according to Matthew offers us profound teachings about the life of Jesus and his relationship with his disciples. In particular, verses 18:1–6 are full of meaning, where Jesus speaks of conversion and becoming like children. These are not just simple concepts, but they contain profound truths that every Christian should familiarize themselves with. How can these instructions affect our lives today? Let’s read more.
Conversion – a change of direction
Conversion means changing one’s lifestyle and way of thinking. In the Bible, it is seen as a change of direction, which is often the first step to faith. For many, this can happen at baptism or in youth. However, many people feel the need for renewal in order to better serve God.
For example, a study in the United States found that 70% of young adults experience spiritual searching after being separated from their childhood church community. This shows that conversion is not just a youthful decision, but an ongoing process. As adults, we can stray and need constant reminders of the importance of conversion.
Conversion is more than just leaving sin. It is a daily decision to live in accordance with God’s will and in His presence. Would you be willing to evaluate your own direction and make the necessary changes? Take a moment to think about your own life: is the direction you are following something you can be proud of before God?
Childlikeness – Genuine Faith
Jesus calls us to become like children, and this has profound implications. Children have many characteristics, such as trust, loyalty, and sincerity, that can teach us about genuine faith.
When a child asks their parents for help, they do not hesitate. Their incredible trust helps us understand how we should trust our Heavenly Father. We adults often take things for granted and forget to ask for help.
The pure faith of childhood can also be seen in statistics: studies have shown that 65% of adults say that their faith began as a child, which confirms the importance of Jesus’ teaching! As we grow into adults, childlikeness can fade. The worries and concerns of the world prevent us from fully trusting God. Doing the will of our Heavenly Father is not just a task for children; it is a responsibility for each of us.
Childlikeness in Everyday Challenges
In the midst of busy lives, it is easy to forget about childlikeness. How can we maintain this attitude? Let’s start by incorporating prayer into our daily lives. Through prayer, we can ask God for help to become like children.
Being like children also means trusting. When children ask their fathers for help, they believe that their fathers will help. We should cultivate the same trust in God in all things. Do you have moments of doubt? Questioning is part of the journey of faith, but it is important to examine why we might cling to things that prevent us from becoming like children.
The Importance of Conversion in Our Relationship with God
As discussed at the beginning, conversion is an active decision that forms the foundation of our relationship with God. We can consider how we can change our direction daily to align with God’s will. Conversion does not have to be just big changes; it can also be small, daily decisions.
For example, we can choose to be kind instead of judging or holding grudges. Such decisions help us draw closer to the heart of God. Likewise, we can confess our sins without fear or shame, for it is a sign of honesty and opens up the opportunity for us to grow.
Jesus teaches that combining conversion and childlikeness is the key to redemption. As we learn to convert and turn to God, we also learn to be childlike. This is not just a personal journey; it is a call to connection and community.
Loneliness can be a barrier, but the community of other believers offers strength. We can share our own conversion stories, and it strengthens us. We share each other’s joys and sorrows and grow together as children of God.
In Education and Example
Children learn by imitating their parents and teachers. This is an important reminder of the value of living according to God’s will. Teachers and parents should live by example so that children can easily learn the basics of the faith.
In education, children should be given the opportunity to learn and grow in God’s Word. The Bible, teachings, and practical examples of divine love are key. When we show children how conversion and childlikeness are manifested in our daily lives, we are laying a good foundation for them to believe.
Time to Reconsider
Finally, it is important to remember the importance of conversion in our relationship with Jesus Christ. His grace lifts us up and makes conversion possible. Jesus’ teachings help us find joy and peace. When we learn to trust Him, we can be set free and become like children.
Now is the time to reflect on your own direction and childlikeness in our relationship with God. Combining conversion and childlikeness allows us to approach the Kingdom of Heaven. Jesus’ teaching is a constant guide for our lives.
Let’s look at our lives with new eyes. Conversion is a choice, and childlikeness is a call. Prosperity depends on how much we are willing to trust God and the power of His grace. How can you change the direction of your life today to align with God’s will and become like children? Remember that He is there, ready to hear your prayers and guide you toward the light.
