Jesus said:

“If you love me, keep my commandments. I will go to the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you forever. That Advocate is the Spirit of truth. The world cannot receive the Spirit, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, because he dwells with you and will be in you.

I will not leave you as orphans, but I am coming to you. A little while longer and the world will no longer see me, but you will see me, because I live and you will live. At that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. Whoever has my commandments and keeps them loves me. And whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and will manifest myself to him.” (John 14:15–21 second edition)

Introduction

The Holy Spirit is one of the most fundamental foundations of Christianity, and this truth is revealed especially at Pentecost. On the day of Pentecost, we remember the moment when Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit to his disciples. This promise is not just a historical event, but it contains profound meaning in the lives of believers. The biblical texts in the Gospel of John (14:15–21) and the Acts of the Apostles provide perspectives that help us understand the role of the Holy Spirit in our lives of faith.

Jesus’ Promise of the Holy Spirit

Jesus’ promise of the Holy Spirit is a central part of his teachings. He tells his disciples that they will not be alone, but that the Father will send them the Spirit of Truth. “If you love me, keep my commandments,” Jesus says (John 14:15). It is said that 70 percent of Christians feel the Holy Spirit working in their lives. This proves how important the Holy Spirit is in the journey of believers, supporting and guiding them.

The Greek term "Parakletos", used for the Holy Spirit, means defender, comforter or teacher. This well describes how the Holy Spirit strengthens our faith and is our helper in everyday challenges. Without this guidance, we cannot properly understand Jesus' message and approach God with our hearts.

The Waiting of the Disciples

The Acts of the Apostles tells us that Jesus instructed his disciples to wait in Jerusalem for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. This period of waiting was crucial, as it prepared the disciples to receive the power of the Spirit. Before the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, the disciples' lives were filled with fear and uncertainty. The change was immense: they became courageous witnesses for Christ, whose example has inspired millions.

When the Holy Spirit descended upon them in 30 AD, this event marked the birth of the church. It was like a powerful breath of fresh air that stirred up excitement and a passion to spread the gospel. Thanks to the Holy Spirit, we have the opportunity to live as followers of Christ and carry His light to the world.

The Spirit of Truth and the Power of Courage

Jesus also describes the Holy Spirit as the Spirit of Truth. This means that His mission is to guide us into the truth and help us understand God’s will. The Holy Spirit strengthens our faith and our courage. Without the Holy Spirit, it could be difficult to believe in Christ as our Lord, and we could get lost in various alternative beliefs.

Currently, over 40 percent of young adults are wondering about true spirituality, as many are searching for answers to questions about their faith. However, the Holy Spirit is the most important guide that leads us to the Word of God and draws us closer to God.

Forgiveness, Knowing God, and the Holy Spirit

With the new covenant, God no longer writes his laws only on tablets of stone, but He writes them on each person’s heart. This means that the Holy Spirit helps us to know God on a personal level. Knowing God is not just theoretical knowledge, but an experience that goes into the heart. When we get to know Jesus, we also get to know God.

When the Holy Spirit comes to us, Jesus comes to us. He promises: “I will not leave you comfortless; I will come to you” (John 14:18). This promise assures us that we are never alone, but that we have a constant, living connection with Christ.

The Holy Spirit as Teacher and Guide

The Holy Spirit does the same work in us that Jesus did among his disciples. He opens the Bible and helps us understand its message. When you have questions about the big things in your life, you can find answers in the Bible.

The Holy Spirit not only teaches, but He also counsels us to make responsible choices. With His guidance, we can live a life that is in line with God’s will. Paul says, “The Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom” (2 Cor. 3:17). This truth is liberating and encouraging; under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we can live in freedom and not in fear.

The Holy Spirit and the Forgiveness of Sins

The death of Jesus on the cross opened the way for us to be forgiven of our sins. The Holy Spirit brings the power of this forgiveness into our hearts. As we learn to live under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we can experience that God’s grace is sufficient in every aspect of our lives.

Forgiveness is a central part of the Christian faith, and the Holy Spirit helps us to understand and receive this forgiveness. We do not have to dwell on the past, but we can grow and develop in Christ, who gave his life for us.

The Holy Spirit and Spiritual Growth

Growing in faith is not just a matter of effort, it is the work of the Holy Spirit in us. The Holy Spirit teaches us, helps us understand the truth, and lives according to God’s will. He creates in us a desire to deepen our relationship with God.

When we open ourselves to the work of the Holy Spirit, we can experience spiritual growth. This growth brings challenges, but the Holy Spirit supports us. With His companionship, we can endure difficult times and remain strong in the attitude of our hearts.

The Holy Spirit and the Importance of Community

Pentecost reminds us that it is not only a celebration of personal faith, but also the birthday of a community, the church. The Holy Spirit unites believers with each other. When we can pray together, our experiences and support grow, which brings strength in the kingdom of God.

Each believer has their own unique gift that strengthens our community. In love and connection, we can live together and grow in Christ.
