Vigil Sunday
Third Edition
Gospel Matt. 24:36–44 Watch Over
Jesus said to his disciples:
“About that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. In the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark. And no one knew until the flood came and swept them all away. So it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding grain; one will be taken and the other left.
Watch therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. And know this: If the master of the house had known in what watch the thief was coming, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. Therefore be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour that you do not expect.” (Matthew 24:36–44 Third Edition)
Jesus’ Teachings on the Second Coming
In Matthew 24:36–44, Jesus states that no one can predict His return. Only the Father knows the exact time. Jesus uses a powerful image of two men or women; one is taken and the other is left. This directly points to the importance of living by faith. For example, if we think about this image in practical terms, we might ask ourselves, “Am I ready if the call comes unexpectedly?”
Jesus’ warnings are serious; they are not to be taken lightly. He tells us that in the coming time, miraculous things will occur: the sun will be darkened, the moon will not give its light, and the heavens will be shaken. Although many have tried to interpret these signs throughout history, it is important to remember that readiness is not based on speculation but on our being ready in our hearts.
The Importance of Watchfulness
Why is watchfulness so important? It does not just mean being physically awake. It also refers to spiritual vigilance. Jesus urges: “Watch therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.” This is an exhortation to live daily in a way that is consistent with faith, not just when everything seems to be going well. Many people wait until difficult times to awaken to faith. This can be dangerous; then it is too late to make decisions. Matters of faith are something we need to deal with before the moment arrives, not when the situation is critical.
Signs and Prophecies
Throughout history, there have been countless attempts to predict Jesus’ return and interpret the signs of the end of the world. Epidemics, the threat of war, and natural disasters have always caused people to ask if this is the time. For example, in 2020, global events such as the COVID-19 pandemic sparked discussions in which many asked if God had sent us warnings. According to Jesus, none of these things necessarily mean his return. Knowledge of history does not prepare us for that moment, because it can come unexpectedly. This is why it is vital to focus on strengthening our faith rather than fearing the future.
Faith and God’s Will
The central question is: Are we ready to stand by our faith, despite the challenges of life? Jesus urged us to follow God’s will, as revealed in the Bible, in prayer, and in fellowship with other believers. Before the last day, we must examine how we are using our time. Vigilance also means being honest with ourselves and our faith. Are we truly committed to our faith practice, or is it just superficial?
Spiritual Readiness in Everyday Life
Building spiritual readiness is an ongoing process that requires time and attention. It is not just situational, but we must live close to God every day. This means praying, reading the Bible, and connecting with other believers. For example, we can commit to regular prayer times or Bible study groups that support our faith and readiness. In difficult times, it is especially important to rely on God’s promises. Difficult times can test faith, but it is possible to find strength and courage in them.
The Importance of Community
Community is an important resource in our spiritual growth. In community, we can share experiences and prayers, and encourage each other to wait for the coming of our Lord. When we pray together, we strengthen our connection with God and with each other. Jesus urged his disciples to pray together so that no one would be alone. So it is important for us to be supportive of each other, especially when spiritual life feels challenging.
Challenges related to watchfulness
Although watchfulness is essential, it can be challenging in the midst of the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Routines and chores can easily distract us. It is important for us to remember what is truly important and what Jesus expects of us. We can combat this challenge by creating routines that support our spiritual life. For example, regular Bible reading and contact with the rest of the church can help us stay alert and ready.
Summary
Watchfulness Sunday highlights the importance of preparing and waiting together for the second coming of Jesus. We are called to turn to God, to live our faith, and to prepare ourselves spiritually. Jesus’ words warn us not to put off questions of faith until the last minute. It would be good for us to live ready every day so that none of us are left alone. So let us be ready, for we never know when the time will come. Let us use this time to strengthen our faith so that we can stand strong in God’s word and watch together as we wait for the Lord.
